Study abroad

The Erasmus program was created in 1987 by the European Community and allows the student to complete a period of study covering 3 to 12 months at a foreign university in the Union.

Since 2014, Erasmus +, the European Union’s Education, Training, Youth and Sports program for the period 2014-2020 was launched.

Specifically, Erasmus for study allows university students to complete a period of study at a university, which has signed an agreement with the university of belonging. Such mobility may entitle you to an economic contribution (under the terms of the Call for International Mobility) and free subscription to the host university. The student can then attend courses and conduct examinations at the partner university, after which he also recognizes the examinations carried out in the university of his own country.

The School of Design also has some bilateral agreements with non-EU universities. These sites are primarily intended for students of the Master’s Degree and may also be required by those who have already had an Erasmus experience abroad during their three-year course.

The bilateral agreement allows students to attend a study period abroad at a partner university without paying the enrollment fee provided by that university, but in some cases a contribution is also paid to student management costs in Exchange (e.g. Orientation fee).

From the a.y. 2002/2003 the School of Design has launched a specific five-year program aimed at achieving the Master of European Design (MEDes) title.
This international training course allows the student to obtain an additional certificate of Master’s Degree awarded by the Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with five other prestigious European design universities.

The universities participating in this European training program are, in addition to the Politecnico di Milano:

• The Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland
• Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Helsinki, Finland
• Konstfack University College of Arts, Stockholm, Sweden
• Ensci Les Ateliers, Paris, France
• KiSD – Köln International School of Design, Cologne, Germany
• Universidade de Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal

The excellence program is aimed at 5 students selected among the members of the 2nd year of the Degree Course in Industrial Product Design, Interior Design and Design of Communication.
Applicants admitted to the MEDes program have two foreign study experiences at two of the partner sites:

• One during the 3rd year of I degree
• The other at the 1st year of Master Degree.

The choice of target universities will be based on the student’s preferences and the availability of partner sites.

The School of Design has launched several double degree programs at the three-year degree and Master’s Degree level.
These programs provide for a period of exchange and collaboration with a partner university and to get a double degree of Master’s degree issued by both schools.
