Packaging, design and innovation – A.Y. 2018/2019

The workshop “CONTAINERS OF IDEAS – packaging, design and innovation” is a “vertical” design experience on the theme of packaging in cellulose material (corrugated cardboard). At an educational level, the workshop highlights how: the design of a packaging can not be reduced to the mere “creation of a box”, but on the contrary it contains many functional / communicative / technological and strategic elements that are often not taken into account. Therefore, already in the analysis phase, the students are called upon to take into consideration all the different functional, technical, material, communicative and expressive aspects that are part of the “Packaging System”.

Ghelfi Ondulati, the workshop’s reference company for many years, gives young people the chance to get closer to the world of packaging and retail, offering special Briefs with a high technical/innovative content. As in previous editions, this year the company has proposed and activated a visit to its headquarters in Valtellina, where the young people have been able to learn the basics of the company’s production system: from the creation of different types of cardboard to its complete transformation into packaging.

This year’s theme was the design of an “extended” Packaging System, in which the “strategic” component, assisted by the use of digital printing, could give rise to marketing actions closely linked to the Packaging or to the Exhibitor that contains them. More specifically, the proposed briefs were :

Packaging for fruit and vegetables in 2-6 pieces format with digital printing

• Floorstand for Rimmel Cosmetic products
• Floorstand /Exhibitor for Pernigotti products
• Floorstand /Exhibitor for loose or bagged Pernigotti products
• Packaging for direct sales and online services

The students, in groups of 3, were asked to propose a strategy with respect to the chosen brief; a strategy that had to take into account the peculiarities of the product to be displayed with respect to the potential offered by digital printing (uniqueness of the packaging and variability of the printed content). How can I attract customers to purchase the product and send their “data” to have to enter their personal details?

In addition to the usual problems found in the packaging system (putting on the machine, stackability, transportability, usability, etc …), the designed element had to be compact during transport, encourage rotation “fifo” (First in First out), “installable” on site without the use of glue or cutter and support the strategic action proposed in the concept phase.

The proposed themes concerned the design of an “expanded” Packaging System, in which the “strategic” part, together with the use of digital printing, could create new Marketing solutions.

Specifically, the briefs proposed were:

· Family packs for Barilla pasta;

· Shelfready packaging for Barilla sauces

· Floorstand for biscuits

· Family packs for Pavesi crackers

· Floorstand for Mulino Bianco snacks

· Multiple packs for Pavesi snacks

The students, in groups of 3, proposed a strategy to the chosen brief; strategy that should take into account the peculiarities of the product to be compared to the potentialities offered by digital printing (uniqueness of packaging and variability of printed content).
